Mod 11 video blog

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

"A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, 1884" and "Expressionism" are the two videos i chose because a Sunday on la grande jatte sounded very elegant and pretty so i wanted to see what this video was about. I chose Expressionism because i read a little bit about it in the art book and i wanted to further my knowledge on the subject.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, 1884: For this video the key concepts are Georges Seurat was the artist who painted la grande jatte. The place its self, la grande latte was a place where prostitutes went to do their job and where couples went to make love by the river. Another key concept i learned was the monkey in the painting was actually added later on to the painting la grande jatte. Many people believe that this monkey symbolizing something. In the video "Expressionism", the key concepts i learned was that expressionism branched out from Fauvism and that it emphasized the emotion in color. Another key concept that i learned was that the painting "ashes" by Edward Munch  that depicted a modern day Adam and eve while they fell from their grace, was originally named "after the fall".

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos relate to the readings in the text because in the text it talks about Expressionism and where and how it branched out from Fauvism. It explains in detail different aspects of expressionism and the different artists and their paintings that emerged from it. The video just gives you more of a visual learning to it. The painting La grande jatte wasn't mentioned in the text but the type of art and the period this painting emerged from is talked about in and throughout the text.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

My opinion of the films was that i really enjoyed the one about La grande jatte. It was so surprising to know that the women standing alone in the painting was prostitutes. I found that to be very daring and  different than the paintings we are used to learning about. The video on expressionism was okay. I felt it could have been a little bit more interesting and could have went into more detail on the artworks. Overall, i enjoyed the videos and learned alot from each one.
